Exploring Sustainable Vernacular Luo Architecture: A Presentation by Sina Hage at Universitat Politècnica de València

On October 26, 2024 , Sina Hage delivered a compelling presentation titled "Traditional Vernacular Luo Architecture within Circular Economy and Sustainable Principles" at the Universitat Politècnica de València . Her presentation highlighted the groundbreaking Gedo Project , a collaboration with Sauti Kuu Foundation , which is focused on integrating sustainable building techniques with Luo cultural heritage to create a meaningful and lasting impact.

The Gedo Project explores the use of locally sourced materials , vernacular architecture , and traditional knowledge to define new standards in sustainability . By blending the wisdom of the past with innovative solutions for the future, the project is paving the way for sustainable living while preserving the rich heritage of the Luo community.

The event was a powerful demonstration of how cultural preservation and modern sustainability practices can coexist, with the Gedo Project serving as a model for how we can adapt traditional knowledge to tackle contemporary challenges. The collaboration between Sina Hage and the Sauti Kuu Foundation is not only redefining the future of sustainable architecture but also offering a fresh perspective on heritage conservation in the context of global environmental goals.

Farewell Willi Lemke

“It’s not that you can’t do it. It’s that you can’t do it yet.” This was Willi’s message to young people, a reflection of his unwavering dedication and belief in their potential. Willi lived by this creed, never giving up when he knew he was on the right path, and never abandoning those he believed in.

I am heartbroken by his passing. For nearly 14 years, as a Board Member of the Auma Obama Foundation Sauti Kuu, Willi stood by my side through every challenge. His steadfast belief in my work fortified my own conviction, giving me the courage and strength to persevere, no matter the obstacles. The void he leaves is profound, and his absence is deeply felt.

As I mourn his passing, I am grateful for the time we shared in June. Willi delivered the Laudation when I received the 'Blaue Zunge Award' in Cologne. We shared a meal, caught up, and cherished each other’s company, unaware it would be our last meeting. I am so thankful that just last week, I had the chance to speak with him, and as always, he reassured me that I could count on him.

Willi, you were my mentor, my anchor as I built my foundation. Thank you for never giving up on me, for always believing in me, and for trusting that I would do the right thing. The Sauti Kuu family is deeply grateful for your unwavering support over the years. We are devastated by your loss and struggling to come to terms with your absence. Please know that you were deeply loved by us, and that you will be sorely missed.

Prestigious NITA Accreditation awarded to the Sauti Kuu Foundation Vocational Training Center

The Sauti Kuu Vocational Training Centre’s unwavering commitment to a holistic high level training in skilled crafts has been recognized this week with the award of accreditation by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

This accreditation is a testament to the exceptional quality of education and vocational training that the Sauti Kuu Centre. It reflect the dedication to not only equipping young people with practical skills but also ensuring that they have the necessary social competencies for employability in the that meet industry standards.

The Sauti Kuu Vocational Centre is now officially accredited by NITA as a designated center for conducting Trade Test examinations.

The following trades have been officially approved:

1. Masonry (MAS)

2. Dressmaking (DM)

3. Tailoring (TAIL)

4. Electrical Wireman (EWM)

5. Arc Welding (AWEL)

6. Plumber & Pipe Fitter (PPF)

Seeds of the Future

Today was a beautiful day! We went to Olkeria primary school and planted trees with the students. It was such a wonderful experience to speak with the students about their lives and their culture. It really makes me want to come back and work with them more. I hope that I get a chance to come back in the future and see the trees we planted. I think the next thing that should be developed at the school is a kitchen garden so the school can become self-sufficient.

In the evening we came together as a group and reflected on the activity. Then we had a "getting to know you" session. It was a really important moment for us as a group to share our personal life experiences and our future goals. I think this has helped us understand each other more, and I think it has brought us closer together. I hope that throughout the rest of the camp we have more sessions like today. It really showed us that we all go through obstacles, but we can overcome. It also taught us that even though we come from different places and backgrounds we all face problems, and everyone’s problem is valid no matter how big or small!

Overcoming Fear

The last two days have been extremely tough for me. I have been completely taken out of my comfort zone. We hiked from Camp Kisanjanj to Camp Olkerio. The hike itself was incredible, as we saw giraffes and zebras on the way. We also saw some elephant trails. I was the navigator of the group so I used the map and compass to get us to each of our check points. The toughest part for me was definitely Loloipange! We were told that it was going to be steep but I was not prepared for what awaited us. Half-way up the hill my fear of heights starting getting to me and I ended up crying the rest of the way up. I am proud of myself that I didn't give up, but Loloipange won't be seeing me for a while! What helped me was that a few of the team members helped me, and really encouraged me going up. We had lunch on top of the hill and as much as the view was great I couldn't relax. I was just thinking about the trek down. After we left Loloipange we made our way to Olkerio, which was a beautiful hike. We were quite behind schedule, so didn't end up going the usual route. Instead we took a shortcut. The view of Mount Kilimanjaro is what kept me going after an already intense day! We all arrived at camp extremely tired and just wanted to go to bed. The following day was another challenging one for me. We went rock climbing and absailing. Again my fear of heights hindered me from getting to the top of the rock but I managed to get at least half-way, with a lot of encouragement from Mawe, Steve, Flo and Papa. I was already anxious on the way to the rock, and had already started crying before I even there. Despite everything I made it out alive! The rock was definitely a struggle for a few of us, and I think that we failed as a team in encouraging each other. I hope that next time we will be more supportive of one another. I found the reflection session after lunch really helpful as I think that it helped all of us understand each other better. I am looking forward to what we do in the next few days to prepare for the climb, but I think the thing I'm most excited about right now is to have shower!

One of the best days of my Life

Today was, I think, one of the best days of my life. Hiking through the Maasai plains was such a great experience! I really enjoyed the walk! At the beginning I had a lot of energy, so I was going at quite a fast pace. After lunch I knew I needed to conserve my energy, so slowed my pace down completely. I really loved that I was able to see this side of Kenya, as usually I had only experienced it by road or plane - you don't get to see so much. The vegetation of areas we walked through fascinated me.

There were some areas that were lush and green and the other side of the path was dry and arid. My favourite moment was when we arrived at camp and you could see Mt Kilimanjaro as clear as day. The sun was setting and the dust from a nearby road had come up from a passing car or boda. Probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen! What excited me the most was the fact that I was looking up at the mountain that I would soon be looking down from!

Tough but Hopeful

Day 3 and it's already getting the best of me, but I need to keep on! Today was a tough one for me emotionally. My anxiety is getting the best of me as we get closer to going out into the plains. I think that venturing into the "unknown" and having to navigate the area is very daunting to me, something completely out of my comfort zone! Due to my anxiety, today I was extra sensitive and the littlest things bothered me. I think one thing that got to me most was being the only one that isn't fluent in Swahili, and not always being able to understand. I think that within the group of young people they forget sometimes that I don't always understand and they aren't sensitive to that. Of course it goes both ways as I am completely willing to learn Swahili but it's not going to happen overnight. Although I come across as tough, I am super sensitive inside and I want everyone to be comfortable around me and vice versa. I think the group activities will help us as a group to be able to communicate and be sensitive to each other’s needs as time goes by, especially as we get to know each other more. Reflecting on this, today is making me feel hopeful for what's to come!

The Journey Begins

Summit of Mount Kilimanjaro

Today we started our journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. First stop is in the Maasai plains, at the foot of the mountain, for our week-long training camp! The drive was much quicker than I thought, although we did break down on the way. Once we arrived at the hotel, we met with the other youth from Tanzania who will be taking part too.

So far I loved our intro session. We did to get to know everyone and also some of the ice breakers in the evening were great. I think we have a great group and it will be interesting to see how we all gel as the camp goes on. I am feeling nervous and excited for what to expect from the camp although I know that I will learn a lot from the experience! I think that once we are trekking and camping in the plains, that is when I will really have to challenge myself mentally and physically. So far I don’t really know what to expect and even though I have spoken to people about the camp and climbing, of course it will be different for everyone. My highlight of the day was definitely seeing Mawe again. He is our instructor, and he has been to our home village to provide youth training a number of times. I’m so excited to be climbing with him as he is so positive so it will definitely push me to continue even when I feel like I want to quit. As I haven’t really done a physical prep for the climb I did look into the Wim Hof Method. Due to the high altitudes, once we get to the mountain, I have been practicing his breathing method so I hope that will help me as I go on.

The scariest and most exciting thing I have ever done

Agreeing to climb Mt Kilimanjaro is probably the scariest and most exciting thing I have ever done! Honestly, I am not the most outdoorsy person which most of my friends and family can confirm but I know this will be a once in a lifetime experience. Since I don’t know when the opportunity will arise for me again, I thought why not. I think that going on this journey will help me in getting to know myself better and also show me that I can achieve anything I set my mind too.

I feel like as much as I read online about other people’s experiences, I still don’t know what to expect. I am really looking forward to meeting new people on this journey and hopefully from my experience I can encourage others to take the leap! I mean not everyone can say that they have reached the highest peak in Africa!

Unsere Vorstandsvorsitzende Dr. Auma Obama und unser Vorstandsmitglied Juliana Gröger, trafen sich am Mittwoch den 23.06.2021, im Rahmen des Projektes ökologische Land- und Forstwirtschaft, mit dem österreichischen Bundespräsidenten Alexander Van der Bellen und seiner Gattin und Schirmherren des Projektes, Doris Schmidauer in Wien. Gemeinsam sprachen sie über zukünftige Projekte mit potentiellen österreichischen Partnern.

DI Dr. Rudolf Freidhager (Österreichische Bundesforste AG), Landeshauptmann-Stv. Mag. Astrid Eisenkopf (Burgenland) und Landeshauptfrau-Stv. Stephan Pernkopf (Niederösterreich) haben ebenfalls an dem Meeting teilgenommen.

Während des Tages, lernte unsere Vorstandsvorsitzende Dr. Auma Obama die Schüler der HBLFA Schule für Gartenbau kennen und bekam von ihnen einen Korb mit frisch geernteten regionalen Lebensmitteln überreicht.

Unsere Sauti Kuu Jugendlichen & Kinder haben an der Storymoja Read Aloud Challenge teilgenommen!

Unsere Sauti Kuu Jugendlichen und Kinder haben am 16. Juni 2021 an der Storymoja Read Aloud Challenge (Vorlese-Challenge) teilgenommen. Am Internationalen Tag des afrikanischen Kindes wurde ein Zeichen gesetzt. Wir freuen uns, dass unsere Sauti Kuu Kinder und Jugendlichen an der Veranstaltung teilgenommen haben und ein Teil von etwas GROSSEM waren! Am 16. Juni 2021 bekamen Tausende von Kindern eine Stimme!

Der 16. Juni ist der Internationale Tag des afrikanischen Kindes. Seit 1991 erinnert der 16. Juni an die Opfer des Soweto-Aufstandes in Südafrika. An diesem Datum erinnern wir uns an den Mut der Studenten, die für ihr Recht auf Bildung demonstrierten, denn sie holt Kinder aus der Armut und Jugendliche aus der Jugendarbeitslosigkeit. Heute, 30 Jahre später, ist es immer noch nicht selbstverständlich, dass Kinder und Jugendliche in Afrika eine Schule besuchen oder eine Berufsausbildung absolvieren. Entweder ist die Schule zu weit weg oder die Eltern können das Schulgeld nicht bezahlen. Wir, die Sauti Kuu Foundation, möchten diese Barrieren durchbrechen und Kindern und Jugendlichen eine Ausbildung ermöglichen.

Die Storymoja Vorlese-Challenge wurde ins Leben gerufen, um das Bewusstsein für die immer noch notwendige Verbesserung der Bildung in Afrika zu schärfen.

Our Sauti Kuu Youths & Children participated in the Storymoja Read Aloud Challenge!

Our Sauti Kuu Youths and Children participated in the Storymoja Read Aloud Challenge on 16th June 2021. On the International Day of the African Child, a mark was made. We are happy that our Sauti Kuu Children and Youths have participated in the event and be a part of something BIG! On 16th June 2021 thousands of children got a voice!

The 16th of June is the International Day of the African Child. Since 1991, the 16th of June honors the victims of the Soweto Uprising in South Africa. On this date we remember the courage of the students who demonstrated for their right to education as it lifts children out of poverty and young people out of youth unemployment. Now, 30 years later, it is still not obvious that children and youths in Africa will attend school or complete vocational training. Either the school is to far away or the Parents cannot pay the fees. We, the Sauti Kuu Foundation, would like to break through these barriers and make education possible for children and youths.

The Storymoja Read Aloud Challenge is created to raise awareness about the still-needed improvement of education in Africa.

Unsere Vorstandsvorsitzende Dr. Auma Obama hat sich am 03. Juni 2021 gemeinsam mit Elke Büdenbender, Ehefrau des Bundespräsidenten von Deutschland und mit Doris Schmidauer, Ehefrau des Bundespräsidenten der Republik Österreich, über Bildung und Ausbildung von Kindern und Jugendlichen ausgetauscht.

Dabei ging es auch um unsere Sauti Kuu Foundation und welche Arbeit unsere Stiftung in Bezug auf die Bildung und Ausbildung von Kindern und Jugendlichen leistet.

 Elke Büdenbender und Doris Schmidauer haben die Schirmherrschaft über zwei neue Projekte unserer Stiftung, „Aufbau eines Berufsbildungszentrums in Kenia“ sowie „Ökologische Landwirtschaft und Agroforstwirtschaft“, übernommen. Der Start der Projekte steht, nach einer Verzögerung durch die Corona-Pandemie, unmittelbar bevor.   In dem Gespräch wurde deutlich, wie entscheidend die berufliche und auch die persönliche Förderung von benachteiligten Kindern und Jugendlichen und ihren Familien ist. Aber auch, wie gewinnbringend und anregend die Zusammenarbeit über Ländergrenzen hinaus sein kann; wie viel wir voneinander lernen können, z. B. über den Umgang mit unseren Ressourcen, über unser Verhältnis zur Natur und über die grundlegende Bedeutung handwerklicher und landwirtschaftlicher Berufe.

Berufsbildungszentrum Projekt

Nach einem strengen und intensiven Bewertungs- und Prüfungsprozess freuen wir uns, dass unser Antrag an das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) über die sequa gGmbH auf Finanzierung für unser SKF-HWK Berufsbildungspartnerschaftsprojekt erfolgreich war.

Dieses Berufsbildungsprojekt wird in Partnerschaft mit der Handwerkskammer Hannover (HWK) und der Auma Obama Stiftung Sauti Kuu, in Alego, mit Unterstützung der Fachhochschule des Mittelstands GmbH (FHM) in Bielefeld, Deutschland, durchgeführt werden.

Weitere Projektpartner sind die regionalen Berufsbildungseinrichtungen sowie verschiedene Wirtschaftsbetriebe in Kenia. Ziel des Projektes ist es, die praktische Berufsausbildung im ländlichen Kenia zu verbessern und praxisorientierter zu gestalten und besser auf die unternehmerischen Bedürfnisse der Wirtschaft auszurichten. Gleichzeitig sollen notwendige soziale Kompetenzen einbezogen und damit die Beschäftigungsfähigkeit der Jugendlichen erhöht und der Standard der Ausbildung verbessert werden.

An einem privaten, zweistündigen Treffen in kleiner Runde, im Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski, mit dem ehemaligen US-Präsidenten Barack Obama und dessen Schwester Dr. Auma Obama, die für ihr soziales und ökologisches Engagement international bekannt ist, nahmen am Freitagabend 15 Gäste teil, darunter Förderer der Sauti Kuu-Foundation und der deutsche Stiftungsvorstand. Die Sauti Kuu Foundation verhilft benachteiligten Kindern und Jugendlichen zu mehr Selbstbewusstsein und Eigenständigkeit - zum Beispiel durch Nachhilfe, Schulsponsoring, Ausbildungsprojekte und Berufsberatung. Mithilfe von Sponsoren vergibt ‚Sauti Kuu‘ Stipendien, die ihnen ermöglichen, eine weiterführende Schule zu besuchen und einen Schulabschluss zu erlangen.

Sport-, Ressourcen- & Ausbildungszentrum für Jugendliche und Familien in Kenia eingeweiht

Nach jahrelanger Aufbauarbeit eröffnete die Sauti Kuu Foundation feierlich das Zentrum, das künftig als sicherer Ort zum Bildungs- und Ressourcenaufbau dient.

Im Beisein von zahlreichen Gästen, Partnern und Förderern wurde am 16. Juli 2018 in Alego, Nyangoma in Siaya County, Kenia das Sport-, Ressourcen & Ausbildungszentrum der Sauti Kuu Foundation feierlich eröffnet. Das Zentrum bietet umfassende Angebote zur Aus- und Weiterbildung von Jugendlichen und ihren Familien aus der ländlichen Umgebung, zur Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und zum nachhaltigen ökologischen Wachstum. „Ich bin sehr glücklich, nach vielen Jahren harter Aufbauarbeit dieses Zentrum nun eröffnen zu können; es ist ein sicherer und behüteter Ort für Kinder, Jugendliche und ihre Familien vom Land, die hier regelmäßig zusammenkommen, ihre Bildung verbessern und Ressourcen aufbauen können“, so Dr. Auma Obama, Vorsitzende und Geschäftsführerin der Sauti Kuu Foundation.

Vocational Training Centre Project

After a rigorous and intense assessment and vetting process we are delighted that our application to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) (German Ministry for Development Corporation) through sequa gGmbH for funding for our SKF-HWK Vocational Education and Training (VET) Partnerships Project was successful.

This Vocational Education and Training Project will be implemented in partnership with the Hanover Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HWK) and the Auma Obama Foundation Sauti Kuu, in Alego, supported by the University of Applied Sciences (FHM) in Bielefeld, Germany.

Other project partners will be the regional vocational training institutions, as well as various business establishments in Kenya. The aim of the project is to improve the practical vocational training in rural Kenya and make it more practice-oriented and better aligned with entrepreneurial needs of industry, while at the same time incorporating necessary social competencies and thus increasing employability of the youth people and improving the standard of delivery.

Barack Obama hosts Dinner for Sauti Kuu Special Advisory Board

The private, two-hour meeting with former U.S. President Barack Obama and his sister Dr. Auma Obama, who is internationally recognized for her social and ecological commitment, was held at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski on Friday evening and was attended by 15 guests, including supporters of the Sauti Kuu Foundation and the German board of the foundation. The Sauti Kuu Foundation helps disadvantaged children and young people to gain more self-confidence and independence - for example through tutoring, school sponsorship, training projects and vocational guidance. With the help of sponsors, 'Sauti Kuu' awards scholarships that enable them to attend secondary school and obtain a high school diploma.

After years of development work, the Sauti Kuu Foundation opened a center, which will serve as a safe place to build up education and resources in the future.

In the presence of numerous guests, partners and supporters, the sports, resources and training center of the Sauti Kuu Foundation was ceremonially opened on July 16, 2018 in Alego, Nyangoma in Siaya County, Kenya. The center offers education and training programs for young people and their families from rural areas, for personal development and sustainable environmental growth. “I am very happy to be able to open this center after many years of hard work; it is a safe and sheltered place for rural children and adolescents and their families, who can meet here regularly, improve their education and build resources, “Dr. Auma Obama, Chairman and CEO of the Sauti Kuu Foundation said.
