The Beginning

The first meeting with young people took place in Alego Nyangoma, in western Kenya, beneath an old fig tree on the grounds of the Senator Obama Secondary School. There, ten pupils sat down with Dr Auma Obama to discuss life in the countryside in Alego Nyangoma – the challenges they faced and their expectations and objectives in life.
In addition to Maurice Otieno, who is sponsored through Sauti Kuu, participants in the discussion that day included kindred spirits such as Turk Pipkin of the Nobility Project and Cameron Sinclair of the non-profit organisation Architecture for Humanity, which has since sponsored the Sauti Kuu Banda project – a refuge where adolescents can spend their free time, take part in workshops on character formation, and acquire practical skills in farming and other areas.
